What's Permaculture

Permanent Culture, or Permaculture, was conceived as a self-sustaining agricultural method, where agricultural systems are designed to require minimal, or ideally, no external human intervention. In modern days this term has been extended to describe an all natural approach to designing self-sufficient and ecologically-balanced human settlements, which minimizes our reliance on industrial systems of production and distribution and promotes synergy and harmony one of the different components of our immediate environment.

Permaculture aspires to determine an ecological balance inside the system. A wonderfully balanced product is one which does not require external modifications and relies completely by itself resources, where one product is used to feed another. For instance, a simple permaculture farm is one which utilizes its animal waste to give its crops, which in turn are used to feed the animals. At the same time, sufficient crops and animal products (such as meat, eggs, etc) are generated to feed the human community. This type of simple system can evolve with time and turn into a very complex ecosystem of their own.

Permaculture uses set of a well-defined group of design principles:

1. Underlying permaculture is observation and planning: before building a farm one should observe study and understand its natural components and how they connect with one another. One needs to consider the natural and artificial boundaries that comprise the machine, as well as the natural resources that are available within it. 2. Evaluating these parameters then leads to the design, implementation and long-term maintenance of the permaculture system. The look is a highly creative and innovative process that is usually the answer to the success of the machine. 3. Central themes within the design range from the utilization of patterns, both natural (like a form of a wave or spiral, common anyway) or patterns helpful for a particular need (like a particular structure to reduce waste). 4. Permaculture often makes use of layers, to create a harmonious and efficient use of space. For instance, layering different sized plants on one soil patch will optimize space usage and allow a diverse and complementary eco-system to emerge.

How can we create and take advantage of permaculture? There are lots of resources, books, courses an internet-based websites that teach individuals how to improve their household and home-farming according to permaculture methods. We are able to begin with planting plants inside a certain pattern, raising farm animals in a certain manner or collecting and recycling water for use at home.
