It is related to the coffee tree (Rubiaceae). It is usually found in rainforests as well as in swamps. Kratom leaves have been employed for hundreds of years in Asia. They are used like a stimulant and sedative (depending on the dose; low does = stimulant and dose = sedative). They are also used as a recreational herb, a problem killer, diarrhea treatment along with a treatment for opiate addiction.

Kratom is a large tree which grows to 12-15 feet in height, in some cases as tall as 40 to 100 feet. Its foliage is green and can be over 7 inches long and 4 inches wide. The flowers have been in yellow clusters. Kratom is an evergreen and the leaves are always being replaced. Kratom thrives in humid, fertile soil, with near full sun exposure away from strong winds. It's drought and frost sensitive.

Kratom has been suspended in many Asian countries because of abuse. It is also thought to be addictive, but more scientific studies are needed to know for sure as true.

Kratom is divided into two sorts in line with the colors of the veins within the leaves; red or green/white. The green-veined variety is said to have a stronger effect, but most users in enjoy mixing them both. Many vendors sell either whole leaf, crushed leaf or powder.
